could (o might) have + participio passato è una costruzione che può indicare:
1 un evento che si sarebbe potuto realizzare ma non si è realizzato: If he had read my message, he could have changed his decision, se avesse letto il mio messaggio avrebbe potuto decidere altrimenti; Why didn't you ask me for help? You might have been hurt, perché non mi hai chiesto aiuto? Avresti potuto farti male;
2 un evento che non si sa se sia realmente avvenuto: The government might have changed their decision, but we'll only know tomorrow, il governo potrebbe aver cambiato la propria decisione, ma lo sapremo soltanto domani; According to some sources, he could have been hurt in the explosion, secondo alcune fonti potrebbe essere rimasto ferito nell'esplosione.
